Israelis Flock To Gun Ranges As Attacks Increase

Israelis are rushing to gun stores following a wave of Palestinian knife attacks and government requests that permit holders carry their handguns in public. Washington Post reports that attackers began using knives, stones, guns and vehicles against Israeli citizens and security forces a few weeks ago in Jerusalem—and the attacks have since spread across the country.

According to Yair Yifrach, the owner of a gun shop and shooting range in the West Bank, the increase in demand has been “dramatic.” “In truth, getting a gun permit in Israel is not easy,” he said.

“This is something Israelis understand, appreciate and feel secure with,” said Jerusalem mayor Nir Barkat. “In America and in Europe, if you see civilians carry guns you get scared. In Israel, it’s exactly the opposite. Given the current escalation in the security situation, those with a licensed firearm who know what to do with it must go out. It’s an imperative.”
