Vote Nears For Texas Right To Hunt And Fish Amendment

When the massive Persian army of Xerxes confronted the small band of Spartans and their allies at the pass of Thermopylae, they demanded that the Greek troops lay down their weapons. According to legend, the Spartan response was characteristically terse: Molon labe—“Come and take them.” A nearly identical response was given over 2,000 years later by the colonists in Gonzales, Texas, to the Mexican detachment that approached the settlement with orders to confiscate the Texans’ single small cannon. The flag that they flew over the town, featuring the lone star and a cannon along with that message of defiance, became an indelible symbol of Texas pride and independence.

That independence is increasingly under threat. Animal-rights extremists and other enemies of freedom have in their crosshairs the time-honored American pastimes of hunting and fishing, and they have the patience to gradually chip away at our rights for decades until they give way. That is why Texas is considering enshrining the right to hunt and fish as an amendment to the state constitution. Voters will find this measure on the state ballot under the title of Proposition 6.

Early voting has already begun in Texas and will last until Oct. 30. The vote will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Please take a moment to read about the proposed state amendment through the links above, and pledge your support to vote “YES” on Proposition 6. There is only one way to guarantee the access of future generations to the national pastimes that instilled a love of nature in so many of us while strengthening family bonds. Don’t let this opportunity pass you by.
