Back in May we reported on the case of a 14-year-old in West Virginia who was arrested for wearing an NRA t-shirt to school. Now there comes a bizarre twist: One of the prosecutors in his case, Chris White, has been suspended for brandishing a firearm inside his own office building.
White’s supervisor, Logan County Prosecutor John Bennett, says that the incident happened because secretaries had decorated the office for Halloween. “He said they had spiders everyplace and he said he told them it wasn’t funny, and he couldn’t stand them, and he did indeed get a gun out. It had no clip in it—of course they wouldn’t know that—I wouldn’t either if I looked at it, to tell you the truth.”
Compared to the actions of White—who reportedly suffers from arachnophobia, as if that explains it—wearing a shirt with a gun on it doesn’t seem too extreme.
Cuomo Climbs Onto National Stage With Anti-Gun Push
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is pledging to get more involved in national gun politics and has forged an alliance with the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. Cuomo will hit the campaign trail in 2016 to emphasize what he calls “the big issue” in national politics—so-called “gun violence.”
“The political climate is right again for action,” Cuomo declares. His efforts with the Brady Campaign will be spent working to crackdown on the improper dealing of firearms. In his role as national spokesperson, he will also be lobbying to bring other governors on board.
Cuomo has a long history of anti-gun activism and was responsible for the “emergency” SAFE Act bill being ramrodded through the New York State Legislature—it bypassed the three-day waiting period for legislation and passed with no hearings, no testimony and no time for opponents to state their opposition.
Brazil Looks To Ease Gun Restrictions To Fight Crime
With one of the highest murder rates on the planet, Brazil is experiencing what one politician there has called “an orgy of gun violence.” Consequently, some in the Brazilian government are trying to do away with severe restrictions on gun ownership so law-abiding citizens can protect themselves against violent criminals.
Under the proposed law, anyone over 21 would be allowed to purchase up to nine firearms a year and 50 rounds of ammunition a month. Additionally, state employees and public figures, ranging from government inspectors to politicians, would be authorized to carry arms, as would private citizens often in the public eye such as taxi drivers.
Of course, just as in America, freedom has its detractors around the world. “It’s a return to the Wild West,” said Ivan Valente, a deputy from the leftist PSOL party. Now where have we heard that before?
Kids Nationwide Will Learn Gun Safety This Halloween
On Halloween this year, many children will learn about something they may not have expected: Gun safety. The Halloween GunSafe® promotion hosted by the NRA’s Eddie Eagle Program will provide educational materials for community events, from school assemblies to mall trick-or-treating, during the holiday. “Halloween offers a great opportunity to talk about safety with our children, and the NRA is thrilled that so many communities are using the chance to teach firearm safety,” said NRA spokeswoman Amy Hunter.
The materials distributed to Halloween GunSafe® participants include workbooks, stickers and an Eddie Eagle DVD. “No other organization in the world does more to promote firearm safety than the National Rifle Association,” said Hunter, “and the Eddie Eagle Program is a prime example of that.”
This Disney Fails To Delight
Another film foray comes out with the Disney name attached, but will likely have none of the timeless charms you’d associate with the Magic Kingdom. Instead, it appears to be an anti-gun finger-wag from a multi-millionaire: Grandniece Abigail Disney brings us Pastor Rob Schenck in her documentary The Armor of Light.
Ms. Disney’s own description of the project pretty much says it all: “I’ve spent most of the past two years making a documentary about a leading evangelical Christian minister who is strongly questioning the close ties between his religion and the NRA. (The film) shows how Rob Schenck, who operates an influential ministry on Capitol Hill in Washington, has begun asking whether pro-life Christians can also be pro-gun.”
Who is Ms. Disney, Reuters or even Reverend Schenck to say “Jesus wouldn’t join the NRA?” This is perilously close to a non-trivial thing called blasphemy if you read the rest of your Bible.
Florida Man Returns Fire Against Armed Robber
After an armed robber fired two shots at him, an Orange County, Florida, man returned fire early Sunday morning, striking the assailant and ending the attack, the sheriff’s office told the Orlando Sentinel.
Tyrell Owens had just returned home when Wilmar Jolteus, 32, a convicted felon with 11 prior arrests, allegedly attempted to rob him. “Jolteus discharged a firearm at victim Owens in an attempt to cause his death,” according to the arrest report. “Owens’ death was prevented only by his superior tactical positioning and return fire. ... Owens, in fear for his life, sought cover behind the wall. The suspect fired at least two rounds at Owens and Owens drew his concealed handgun and returned fire.”
Jolteus was charged with first-degree attempted murder with a firearm and attempted robbery with a weapon at Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he was treated for gunshot wounds to his leg and buttock.
