Federal-State Partnership Puts NJ Criminal Out Of Commission

posted on October 7, 2015

Career criminal Kadeem Coleman would likely be back on the streets of Paterson if it were up to New Jersey law. But thanks to a partnership between the Department of Justice and local police, Coleman is now being held without bail after being hit with a federal weapons charge.

Coleman was initially arrested on Sept. 12 on gun charges. He was free on bail 12 days later when he was shot in the leg. It was then that Ceasefire unit detectives discovered that Coleman was under investigation by BATFE and slapped him with the federal charge—one that carries stiffer penalties and potential prison time.

“This federal partnership is the key to stopping the flow of illegal weapons into our city,” Paterson Police Director Jerry Speziale said of the joint investigation with the federal agents. “If we have to do this one by one, that’s what we’ll do.”
