New Bill Would Make TSA Recognize Handgun IDs

posted on November 26, 2015

U.S. Rep. Diane Black, R-Tennessee, has introduced a bill that would require the Transportation Security Administration to accept handgun carry permits with photographs as a valid form of identification. She maintains in an essay published by Fox News that current standards—which reportedly allow a Costco membership card but not a official permit that is more difficult to acquire than a driver’s license—are discriminatory against gun owners.

The legislation, known as the Nondiscriminatory Transportation Screening Act or “TSA Act,” would also prohibit tracking or disseminating the information of individuals who use handgun permits as IDs. Black, who is also a registered nurse, pointed to strong bipartisan support that already exists for such a measure in states including Texas.
