Recreational Shooting Threatened On Utah Conservation Area

posted on November 7, 2015

A proposal to close more than 63,000 acres of public land at the Beaver Dam Wash National Conservation Area in Utah to recreational shooting would greatly impact shooters in the area and is being opposed by the National Rifle Association.

In the plan, the Bureau of Land Management’s preferred strategy is to close 80 percent of the area to recreational shooting. Another strategy offered is to close the entire NCA to shooting. Two other alternatives would leave the NCA open for shooting as it is now.

“For years, the NRA and other sportsmen’s groups have asked that recreational shooting be managed like camping and hiking so that recreational use conflict is reduced,” NRA spokeswoman Catherine Mortensen told the Tribune. “We want shooting to be conducted in safe and accessible environments where there are natural or man-made backstops. All too often, federal land management plans without considering the impact on shooters who use those areas.”
