Writer Confused Over Why Younger Americans Like Guns

posted on December 9, 2015

A Washington Post columnist on Tuesday expressed dismay that younger Americans don’t appear to be the driving force for gun control that many in the gun-ban movement had hoped they would be.

Catherine Rampell’s column, titled “Millennials’ Mysterious Support for Permissive Gun Laws,” chronicles how younger Americans, just like those in older age groups, more generally oppose more restrictive gun laws than support them. “Given the ambivalence of today’s young people—who are tomorrow’s high-voter-turnout middle-aged and older people—I wouldn’t expect that balance of power to shift (to anti-gun) anytime soon,” Rampell concluded.

Rampell need not have looked at reams of research to come to the same conclusion we do on a weekly basis when visiting the local shooting range. Just one trip will show that younger Americans are flocking to ranges in higher numbers than ever before—happily practicing the Second Amendment right that many in the media would love to curtail.
