Former Felon Attacks Armed Attorney

posted on June 24, 2015

An Oklahoma City attorney was attacked outside his home by one of his clients on Saturday. The lawyer, 48-year-old Jay Silvernail, reacted by pulling out a gun, shooting and killing 54-year-old David Smith.

Smith was a longtime felon who was paroled last year after spending more than two decades in prison for a 1988 robbery conviction. He had four years left on his parole. Smith was a client of Silvernail, whose work included the representation of criminal defendants.

The former felon had gone to the home of his attorney to pick up some property. As the two were walking to a car, Smith became upset at one point and started attacking Silvernail. That’s when Silvernail, acting in self-defense, shot Smith. Silvernail isn’t expected to face any charges.
