Springfield, Mo., police said a man was shot multiple times Friday by a resident who claims the man was burglarizing his home in the 800 block of South Link Ave.

Springfield Police Lt. Robert Byrne told the Springfield News-Leader that police believe the home was not randomly chosen, but rather was “specifically targeted” by the burglar. He also said that it appeared as though the resident had been protecting himself.

According to recent statistics from the FBI, Missouri’s third-largest city ranked second in the nation among similar-sized cities for property crimes, and sixth in the nation among similar-sized cities for violent crimes. Over the past decade, Springfield’s violent crime rate has roughly doubled, according to analysis by the Springfield News-Leader.
