New York Suspends SAFE Act’s Ammunition Sales Database

Conceding to Republicans who won control of the New York Senate last year—largely due to voter backlash against the state’s new anti-gun SAFE Act—Democrat N.Y. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has agreed to suspend development of the central statewide database of ammunition sales mandated by the law.

Suspension of the system was part of a “memorandum of understanding” sealed between Senate Republicans and the Cuomo administration.

“We applaud the memorandum of understanding that Senate Majority Leader Flanagan signed today,” said James J. Baker, director of state and local affairs for NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action. “This is a step in the right direction to restore a degree of sanity after the SAFE Act’s over-the-top demonization of lawful New York gun owners. The Senate Republican Conference did the right thing by ending this unworkable and costly database. Most importantly for gun owners, it removes the prohibition of online ammunition sales.”

Bernie Sanders Silences Gun-Ban Activist At Policy Forum

Democrat presidential candidate and self-proclaimed “socialist” U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, D-Vt., shut down a gun-control activist who questioned one of his pro-gun votes at a policy forum in Arlington, Va., on Thursday night.

Honora Laszlo, who volunteers for Michael Bloomberg’s Moms Demand Action gun-control group, asked Sanders why he’d voted for the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, to which Sanders replied, “If somebody has a gun and somebody steals that gun and they shoot somebody with it, do you really think it makes sense to blame the manufacturer of that weapon? If somebody sells you a baseball bat and somebody hits you over the head with it, you’re not going to sue the baseball bat manufacturer.”

“I don’t apologize for that vote,” Sanders said. “I come from a state that has virtually no gun control, and it turns out one of the safest states in the country.”
