“We’re Fighting A War Here”

The “here” that Republican presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson is referring to is on U.S. soil. It’s just outside of Phoenix, Ariz., where Mexican drug cartels have seized a 50-mile swath of land. When Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu states that “This is literally an unsecured border”—as he’s been saying for years—he is not exaggerating.

With billions of dollars in drugs and thousands of undocumented individuals moving freely into America, Babeu has been begging for help from the Obama administration. He points to the absurdity of a single small county trying to take down a powerful cartel, where one day’s total following a $3 billion drug bust netted 76 arrests and 108 weapons. Yet Babeu has been met with nothing but silence from America’s leader.

One of Obama’s would-be successors clearly understands the urgency. Upon viewing the porous border up close, Carson suggested utilizing drones to help fight the uphill battle.
