D.C. Officials Cite Non-Existent Stats On “High-Capacity” Mags

As Washington, D.C.’s murder crisis ramps up, the mayor and police chief have been quick to place the blame on guns and, in particular, so-called “high-capacity” magazines. Yet according to a Fox 5 report by Emily Miller, both have made statements that aren’t completely truthful.

Mayor Muriel Bowser recently said: “Guns continue to make their way into the hands of violent criminals. Unfortunately some of those guns have high-capacity magazines that inflict maximum harm.” Police Chief Cathy Lanier doubled down: “Multiple of our cases have high-capacity magazines and multiple rounds fired, making the shots more lethal.”

However, Fox 5’s Miller has learned the department does not track the magazine capacity of seized guns, so neither the mayor nor the chief have any statistics about the matter. In fact, the form police use when they get property in a crime has a section for firearms, but no question for ammunition capacity.
