Bandemonium, Canadian Style

Politicians in Hamilton, Ontario, are learning something that many in the American gun-ban movement also have a hard time understanding—when guns have been banned and criminals continue using them, it’s hard to ban them even more.

According to a report in The Hamilton Spectator online version, after a recent mid-day shootout in downtown Hamilton, Mayor Fred Eisenberger said: “I think anything we can do to make guns less accessible is a positive step. We ban a lot of things in the city. My question would be ‘Can we ban guns?’”

City lawyers looked into that request and brought the mayor some negative news. As it turns out, the city has already banned carry of a loaded firearm. And it has already banned firing of guns in the city limits. Perhaps Mayor Eisenberger might have more luck with a law making it illegal for violent criminals to shoot people in the streets. Oh, wait: I guess the criminals shooting up downtown must have missed that memo.
