Brits Worry That Law-Abiding Citizens Might Be Insufficiently Disarmed

posted on September 16, 2015

Led off by a photograph of un-ownable (in Britain) guns, a positively bizarre mish-mash of factoid and innuendo is stirring up concern across the pond. A new “study” asserts that the 1.8 million firearms still in the hands of citizens make “gun massacres … likely in the UK.”

Harkening back to a single 2010 case where the mostly disarmed police futilely chased the perpetrator for more than two hours before he killed himself, the silly extrapolations abound. Consider Stephen Otter of Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary, for instance: “To have a less consistent way of licensing someone than to drive a bus is simply wrong.”

That seems preposterously unlikely in a country already well practiced in confiscation, and with virtually no remaining centerfire ownership of rifles or handguns anyway. The “illegality” that seems of such great concern isn’t revealed until the last paragraph—government backlogs or non-renewals. Whose problem is that?
