A recent Gallup poll reveals that almost half of Americans regard the federal government as a potential threat. As pointed out in this helpful breakdown of the polling results from NRA-ILA, the most commonly cited reason for distrusting the government is the fear that they would violate the Second Amendment.
While fear of the government’s actions is often painted as paranoia, it is fruitful to remember that the nation’s top fear—the prohibition and confiscation of guns—is an outcome that this administration is actively, if covertly, pursuing.
Armed Citizen Takes On The Same Gang A Second Time
Homeowner Juan Flores of Palm Beach, Fla., was at home when a man approached his door with what looked like a food delivery. Suspecting his intentions, Flores told him to leave, only to see another man get out of the car carrying a rifle. He shouted to his family to call 911, but the suspects fled before they arrived. The man who wielded the gun has since been arrested, according to the Palm Beach Post.
This was on July 28. More recently, on Aug. 13, Flores came home to find two alleged members of the same street gang burglarizing his house. One of the invaders reportedly raised a rifle when Flores confronted them, so the homeowner shot them both with his handgun, killing one and wounding the other. In doing so, Flores proved to these criminals that he would not be an easy target.
Cuomo Doubles Down On Calls For Federal Gun Control
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo isn’t done agitating for federal gun control in the wake of the shooting death of Carey Gabay, the top state attorney. According to Huffington Post, Cuomo also made the murdered man’s funeral eulogy a platform for more anti-gun rhetoric. “His death was one of the most tragic, pointless examples of the rampant violence that is spreading like a cancer through our society, especially in our poorer communities and especially in our communities of color,” Cuomo said.
We agree with his characterization of Gabay’s fate as tragic and pointless, but we reject his assertion that legislation targeting law-abiding citizens will do anything to confront the endemic violence that he identifies. Rather than stumping for more pointless laws, Cuomo would have done better to focus on celebrating the life of his friend.
