A House bill in Alabama is taking an interesting approach to concealed carry on college campuses: It would introduce an amendment to the state constitution that, if approved by voters, would institute campus carry in all higher learning facilities. “There are just not enough police officers to be everywhere, and this would allow you to protect yourself, heaven forbid something happen, but you would have the opportunity,” Rep. Mack Butler, R-Etowah County, who wrote the legislation, explained to WKRG.
At this point, recognizing campus carry is the prerogative of schools in Alabama, and most have rules against it. “Every single one of these mass shootings, the target has been a gun-free zone, and my goal has been to remove as many of those zones as possible,” said Butler.
Delaware: 71 Percent Of Gun Charges Are Not Prosecuted
In Vice President Joe Biden’s home state of Delaware, 71 percent of felony weapons charges filed between 2012 and 2014 were not prosecuted, meaning that in that three-year period, over 8,300 felony weapons charges simply disappeared, the News Journal reports.
Even in cases where someone is charged with being armed while committing some other felony, out of more than 5,300 such charges, 80 percent were not prosecuted during that period, according to the 2012-2014 report by the Delaware Criminal Justice Council.
Prosecutors try to justify their actions by claiming that dropping gun charges sometimes lets them win convictions on other lesser charges, but batting averages aren’t everything: Had Delaware prosecutors convicted two-time convicted felon and murder suspect Mateo Pinkston of the three weapons charges he faced in 2012, Pinkston still would have been in jail when, police say, he shot and killed mother of two Arteise Brown, 25, last year.
Virginia Bill Would Overturn AG’s Reciprocity Decision
A new bill has been introduced in the Virginia state legislature that would overturn the controversial gun-control measures announced by Attorney General Mark Herring last month. The proposed legislation would effectively reverse the attorney general’s decision to stop recognizing concealed-handgun permits from 25 states with less restrictive gun laws. If passed, the bill would authorize concealed-carry permits from any state, as long as the permit-holders are at least 21, and Herring would be obligated to sign reciprocity agreements with states that require them to recognize Virginia permits.
“This bill will protect the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Virginians, specifically their right to carry a concealed handgun outside of the commonwealth,” said state Sen. Bryce Reeves, R–Spotsylvania, in a statement to The Free Lance–Star. “A clear majority of Virginians believe that law-abiding citizens have the inherent right to self-defense, including when outside of their home.”
Anti-Gun Groups Rally In Newtown During SHOT Show—Along With Gun-Rights Supporters
While the NSSF was gearing up for the opening of their annual SHOT Show on Monday in Las Vegas, more than 2,500 miles away several anti-gun groups descended upon the organization’s headquarters to protest the group’s “irresponsible marketing and lobbying efforts” and what they see as interference with efforts to increase gun control.
But while the freezing temperatures were little deterrent to the gun-banners, they also didn’t keep away a number of pro-gun supporters, dozens of whom had already gathered with signs of their own by the time the rally was set to begin.
That the demonstration was peaceful didn’t diminish the falsehoods being peddled by the protestors, however. In a statement, NSSF reiterated that the SHOT Show is not open to the public, and explained, “Many programs and services exhibited at the show are related to the safety of the public … we are proud of our many successful firearms safety initiatives.”
Milwaukee County Sheriff Blasts President Obama And Hillary
Outspoken Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke had some harsh words for President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and anti-gun Democrats recently. Appearing on Fox News’ Hannity, the Wisconsin lawmaker responded to Clinton’s calls for “a rival organization to the NRA” and said one already existed: The Democratic party.
Clarke went on to call Obama and Clinton “anti-gun bigots” and said they were intolerant of anyone else’s view when it comes to the Second Amendment. To reduce violence, Clarke advised the president to target the criminal and not law-abiding citizens.
Clarke concluded by saying he wants as many law-abiding citizens to arm themselves as possible so that he has the partners he needs to beat back violence. “The great equalizer is a law-abiding citizen.”
Robber Shot By Store Owner In West Virginia
The owner of a convenience store in Fort Gay, W.Va., received a notification that an alarm was going off in the establishment. When he arrived at the store, he reportedly found a suspect loading goods into a bag. The two men struggled, and the owner ended up shooting the suspect.
Police believe that the incident may be related to another call from the night before, when someone apparently tried to steal an ATM from the premises; they are also looking for a second suspect. According to WSAZ, the wounded suspect is expected to survive, and the owner will not be charged for shooting him.
