NRA To Sue Oakland Over Gun-Control Laws

posted on January 9, 2016

January 4, attorneys for the NRA and the California Rifle and Pistol Association informed the Oakland City Council of their intent to file suit to block the implementation of the city’s newly approved gun-control laws. The laws will require firearms in homes to be disabled with a trigger lock or secured in a locked container and will establish a citywide ban on gun magazines that can hold 10 or more cartridges. The Oakland councilmembers also approved a new law prohibiting the storage of unsecured firearms in vehicles parked on public streets.

The NRA and CRPA believe that both laws infringe on the Second Amendment right of gun owners and are a violations of state laws. “Adoption of such an extreme and unconstitutional law will result in litigation against the city to enjoin enforcement and have it declared invalid,” read a letter from the attorneys of the gun-rights organizations sent to the council.
