Lawmaker Asks For Investigation Into Tucson Gun Destruction

posted on October 18, 2016

An Arizona state representative is asking the state’s attorney general to investigate whether the city of Tucson is breaking state law by destroying guns confiscated by police.

Rep. Mark Finchem told Tucson.com that he has proof that Tucson officials are breaking the law requiring the sale, not the destruction, of otherwise legal guns—including a collectible gun worth more than $10,000.

“The city of Tucson flagrantly violated state statutes and deprived the taxpayers of the opportunity to obtain fair market value of a public asset,” Finchem said in a press release.

A 2013 law states that local governments that violate state laws lose their state-shared revenue if they don’t stop. Attorney General Mark Brnovich is expected to begin an investigation soon.
