Shootings Rise Dramatically In Chicago; 9 Fatalities Over The Holiday

posted on November 29, 2016

On Sunday, two men killed less than 10 minutes apart brought Chicago’s total number of shootings to 61, with nine fatalities over the long four-day weekend. That adds up to one additional fatality and over 40 more shootings than last year’s Thanksgiving weekend, defined as the time between 7 p.m. Thanksgiving Eve and continuing through Sunday night.

The final two homicides had established characteristics of Chicagoland murders. Around 2 p.m., a 37-year-old man was killed when an attacker from across a neighborhood street fired, then escaped on foot. Ten minutes later, an 18-year-old driving his car was shot several times by an assailant in an SUV, who also sped away from the scene. To date, the number of shootings this year in Chicago exceeds 4,050, with more than 650 of those resulting in death—meaning one person is shot every minute and fifty-eight seconds, with a fatal shooting every 11 minutes.
