In the foothills of California’s San Gabriel Mountain range, an off-duty sheriff’s deputy (aka, an armed citizen) returned home with his young children and rounded the corner to the front door. That’s when they encountered three black bears rummaging through the trash—one of which charged toward the family.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department told KTLA-5, “Fearing for his life, and the lives of his children, the deputy fired several rounds from a handgun toward the bear.” It was believed the bear may have been injured, as it suddenly turned and fled with the other two into a wooded area.
The family was not injured, and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s search for the three bears has so far been unsuccessful. The sheriff’s office has since issued a reminder to area residents that wildlife sightings are more common in the foothills and that wild animals are drawn to homes by trash, pets and water.
With Five Weeks To Go, Obama Finally Gets Tough With Russia
In an “exit interview” with National Public Radio, Barack Obama engaged in some belated finger-wagging at Russia.
He all but blamed Russian hacking for Hillary Clinton’s defeat: “There's no doubt that it contributed to an atmosphere in which the only focus for weeks at a time, months at a time were Hillary's emails, the Clinton Foundation, political gossip surrounding the DNC,” Obama said.
“There is no doubt that when any foreign government tries to impact the integrity of our elections, we need to take action—and we will, at a time and place of our own choosing … Mr. Putin is well aware of my feelings about this, because I spoke to him directly about it,” he added. However, with five weeks left in office, he admitted that any punitive action would be up to the Trump administration.
This sounds a lot like, “We have been very clear to the Assad regime … that a red line for us is we start seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized.” Assad wasn’t impressed, either.
Mr. President, you had eight years to get tough with Russia. Yelling “Yeah, you better walk away!” at Putin’s back only demeans American foreign policy further.
Facebook “Fact Checkers” To Define, Suppress “Fake News”
Facebook announced Thursday it will begin “fact checking,” flagging and suppressing what it determines to be “fake news” and hoaxes in its News Feed, with Politifact, Factcheck.org, ABC News and Snopes doing the so-called “fact checking,” Business Insider reports.
Facebook will also reportedly use algorithms to monitor readership, and if a “story that appears fake is going viral, to determine if it should label the story as fake and bury it in people’s feeds.” Facebook will also effectively blackball Internet domains that it determines to be “fake news organizations” and prevent those domains from selling ads on Facebook.
However, Facebook’s head of media partnerships, Patrick Walker, was quick to point out that “We do not think of ourselves as editors” in what founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg now calls “a new kind of platform” and “space where people can be informed.” Coming from a company that openly discussed “What responsibility does Facebook have to help prevent President Trump in 2017?” that’s irony straight out of Orwell’s Ministry of Truth.
Anti-Gun Groups Pushing Ohio Gov. Kasich To Veto Self-Defense Legislation
NRA-ILA is reporting that anti-gun groups have escalated their tactics and are fiercely lobbying Ohio Gov. John Kasich to veto Sub. Senate Bill 199—an important piece of NRA-backed self-defense legislation.
Sub. SB 199 exempts active duty members of the U.S. Armed Forces from the concealed-carry permit license requirements. The bill also makes several important changes in the Concealed Handgun Law regarding a person who is an active-duty member of the U.S. armed forces and is carrying a valid military identification card and a certificate issued by the person's applicable service branch indicating that the person has successfully completed small arms qualification (qualifying member of the military).
Sub. SB 199 also allows an employee to store a firearm in his or her locked vehicle without fear of employer retribution.
Use Your Power!
Sub. SB 199 is an important self-defense bill that aims to protect the Second Amendment rights of active-duty military members, employees and law-abiding Ohioans across the Buckeye State. Please contact Gov. Kasich and urge him to support this important bill byclicking here.
Detroit Women Training For Armed Self-Defense
Women in Detroit are taking up arms, and their motivation is singular—self-defense. At the Action Impact Firearms and Training Centers in Eastpoint and Southfield, ladies are showing up in droves for eight-hour classes that will teach them how to shoot.
The Detroit News talked to some of these women and, for each, the story is very similar. “Because I’m home now by myself and we see a lot of seniors who are being targeted in home invasions, I do want to take it upon myself to learn how to use a gun,” said newly widowed Nita Brown, 63. Alanna Tremble, 26, added, “My older sister was robbed a few years ago. I think it is better to be educated about this.”
Brown, Tremble and many other women like them are taking charge of their own safety. And they’re doing it by taking matters into their own hands in the form of firearm training.
