NRA News Investigative Reporter Ginny Simone had a chance to sit down with NRA Past President David Keene in the aftermath of the election. They discussed not only the message that the election sent, but also what’s next for gun owners.

Keene called the November election a “cultural revolt,” saying it changed politics in this country in a way that hasn’t been seen in our lifetime. And leading the charge, he noted, were NRA members—the people who care about the Second Amendment and traditional values.

“This year, the people who share those values responded in a way that they never have,” Keene said. “They don’t want the continuation of the policies that they got when they elected Barack Obama. Trump was elected to reverse that legacy.”“This year, the people who share those values responded in a way that they never have,” Keene said. “They don’t want the continuation of the policies that they got when they elected Barack Obama. Trump was elected to reverse that legacy.”

While emphasizing what the election did mean—“The message is that the American people still matter … the people spoke and said we want to restore American values”—Keene was also quick to point out what it did not mean.

“That does not mean that gun owners get a free ride,” he cautioned. “This is not a war that you win, it’s a battle that you win.”

Keene warned that it would be a serious mistake if gun owners were to suddenly became complacent. He assured us that the gun-control crowd isn’t giving up, and reminded us that nothing is ever taken care of forever. “There is no forever,” he warned.
