Federal Legislation Would Curb President’s Executive Actions On Guns

posted on March 9, 2016

A measure just introduced in Congress by U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer, R-Mo., would target certain portions of President Barack Obama’s recent executive actions concerning guns and gun ownership.

Luetkemeyer said his legislation would prevent the president from interfering with families handing down guns “from one generation to the next as treasured heirlooms” or inheriting firearms without a background check. The bill states the president cannot take action more restrictive than those in effect at the time of his executive actions in early January, and describes family as an individual’s “spouse, or a child, sibling, grandchild, or legal guardian.”

“This common-sense legislation would simply protect the ability for Americans to transfer firearms to their family members, and I am eager to work with my colleagues to move this bill forward,” Luetkemeyer said in a statement.
