L.E. Opposition To CA Gun-Control Measures Continues To Grow

posted on May 19, 2016

While Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom claims his gun-control proposals—which would require bullet purchasers to be registered with the state, require bullet/ shotgun shell sales be reported to the state, ban so-called large-capacity magazines, and mandate confiscation of rifles capable of holding those magazines, among other things—will ensure “Safety For All,” many in the law-enforcement community disagree.

On Tuesday, members of many local law enforcement agencies, led by Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims, spoke out in disapproval at a news conference. Mims explained that while the proposals have a “catchy name,” constituents “shouldn’t be fooled.”

“Voters should be concerned about passing any additional gun-control laws,” Mims said. “These laws will not be obeyed by terrorists, gang members, robbers or home invaders.” Moreover, she said, there’s nothing in the legislation that would exempt law enforcement officers, and the measures would “divert law enforcement from fighting real crime.”

In addition to those gathered Tuesday, members of California’s largest police union have also expressed opposition.
