Gun Control Alive And Thriving In Chicago

Gun control rolls on in Chicago, and so does its deadly consequences. This past weekend saw five killed and 40 wounded in shootings that took place between Friday afternoon and Monday morning.

“We need more values, fewer guns and stronger sentences against violence offenders,” said Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson on Sunday. “Everyone has a role to play in fixing it—police working with parents, judges, residents, clergy, community leaders and others.”

Johnson’s right about stronger sentences—Chicago isn’t going to solve inner-city gang violence by sending criminals immediately back to the streets. Coupled with the city’s strict gun-control legislation that leaves guns only in the hands of criminals, it shouldn’t be any surprise that violent crime is the result.

These weekend tallies from the Windy City have become predictable if not preventable. When will city leaders determine that the deadly toll is simply too great to ignore?
