College Settles Lawsuit With Student Over Pro-Gun Message

posted on May 6, 2016

It began as a simple recruitment effort. In February of last year, Nicole Sanders was trying to enlist fellow students at Blinn College to join a new organization she was forming entitled Young Americans for Liberty. Toward that end, she and a friend stood in front of the student center and held up signs—one read “Defend Gun Rights on Campus.”

As she was wrapping up for the day, Sanders was approached by an administrator and three armed campus police officers who told her she needed special permission to recruit for the club. They even questioned whether promoting a pro-gun message on campus was allowed.

Undeterred, Sanders firmly stood her ground. She also filed a lawsuit against the school. Tuesday, she got her vindication when the Texas college settled the suit by agreeing to revise their restrictive policies. They also agreed to pay Sanders $50,000 in damages and legal fees.
