New York Times Admits Senate Gun-Control Filibuster Was Waste Of Time

posted on June 17, 2016

The New York Times admitted that the 15-hour filibuster by anti-gun U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., was little more than grandstanding.

In an article titled, “Senator’s 15-Hour Filibuster Gains Path Forward For Gun Control Measures,” author David Herszenhorn wrote, “For all the theater, Mr. Murphy’s main achievement beyond delivering the Democrats’ message on C-Span—and creating a sensation on social media—was to force at least one Republican to remain in the chair as presiding officer, as well as to keep all of the essential Senate clerks and other floor staff members at work for a long night.”

Senate Republicans were already prepared to allow votes on two previously defeated Democrat-sponsored gun-control amendments because they want votes on their own measures.

“Democrats almost certainly would have gotten their votes, anyway—without the more than 15 hours of speeches by him and by at least 40 other senators who helped sustain his effort by asking him to yield time for questions,” wrote Herszenhorn.

But Sen. Murphy got his Twitter feed.
