Every now and again, we encounter what starts out as sense in the strangest places: HuffPo took such a run recently with the Freakonomics of Gun Control.
It starts with interesting (some even true) observations about the unlikelihood of certain types of homicides, and particularly those that the media loves to make Americans think are of plague or epidemic proportions when they clearly are not.
Needless to say, the devolution to recycled tripe doesn’t take long, including the gem “perhaps paranoia should count as one of the mental defects that disqualifies people from owning firearms.” Paranoia as determined by whom, we can’t help but wonder.
In the end, it’s another rant for gun registration, but a clever one: The suggestion is made that by permitting registration, most can keep their firearms. Particularly in this crucial election year, expect these boondoggles to grow in frequency and subtlety, and remember they all end the same—no more Second Amendment in any meaningful sense.
Has Federal Judge Posner Revoked His Pledge To Support The U.S. Constitution?
In an op-ed on Slate.com, veteran federal judge Richard Posner wrote, “I see absolutely no value to a judge of spending decades, years, months, weeks, day, hours, minutes or seconds studying the Constitution, its amendments, and its implementation …
“Eighteenth century guys, however smart, could not foresee the culture, technology, etc., of the 21st century. Which means that the original Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the post-Civil War amendments (including the 14th), do not speak today.”
Posner doesn’t stop there: “… law professors are too respectful of the Supreme Court … I regard the posthumous encomia for Scalia as absurd.”
Such disdain for the bedrock of U.S. democracy is shocking coming from a judge on the U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, whose oath requires applicants to swear, “I will support the Constitution of the United States.” Judge Posner clearly has no fealty to his oath, and as such has no business on the federal bench … nor any other.
Clinton Calls Gun Control A “Civil Rights Issue”
Hillary Clinton is again calling for gun control, but now she has a new name for it: civil rights. During a speech Monday in Chicago, the Democratic presidential candidate stated, “I think saving our children and other people from gun violence is a civil rights issue right now in America.”
Given her spotty record on American history—she recently confused the Constitution with the Declaration of Independence—it’s unclear whether Clinton is aware that a civil right is one which protects an individual’s freedom from infringement. Because she’s doing the exact opposite—Hillary isn’t fighting for your rights, she’s fighting to strip your rights.
Ironically, Clinton made this pitch in one of the most gun-controlled cities in the nation. The Windy City, despite all of its laws, is on pace to far surpass last year’s homicide total of 2,988. But that inconvenient truth was left unmentioned during her “civil rights” plea.
FBI Fails To Notify Thousands Of Citizens They Are On ISIS “Kill List”
Although the FBI discovered an ISIS “hit list” containing the names of over 15,000 everyday U.S. citizens, none were alerted by the agency. The terror group published the kill list on an encrypted website, including names and home addresses of individuals from California and New York to Texas—all targeted for death.
Circa News says it has identified almost two dozen Texans on the list alone who were never contacted by the FBI, which also never alerted local police. A woman who wished to remain anonymous told Circa, “I was terrified. We live in a different world and the Jewish community is a number-one target of these radicals. I’m very upset that I was not notified by the FBI or local law enforcement.”
Though it seems like a serious oversight, former FBI agent Chad Jenkins said, “I would be very shocked if the FBI was not taking this seriously.”
After he punched her in the head during an altercation in mid-April, 40-year-old Lee Brandenburg’s girlfriend left him and moved herself and her daughter in with her 76-year-old father for safety. But just after midnight Thursday morning, Brandenburg—who police say has a long history of threatening the woman—decided to carry out his violent plans.
He had succeeded in breaking out the home’s living room window, but the noise caught the attention of the woman’s father, who retrieved his firearm and went to investigate. Fearing for the family’s safety after finding Brandenburg armed with a gun and attempting to enter the home, the woman’s father fired several shots at Brandenburg’s legs and called 911.
According to Albuquerque Police Department spokesman Tanner Tixier, Brandenburg was transported to a local hospital in stable condition, and is expected to face aggravated burglary and battery charges. The homeowner, who acted in self-defense, will not face any charges.
