Oregon Governor Targets Gun Owners

posted on July 19, 2016

Democratic Oregon Gov. Kate Brown has announced three gun-control goals for the 2017 legislative session—all of which will target law-abiding gun owners while doing nothing to reduce crime.

One proposal, HB 4147, would remove the current safeguard that prevents indefinite delays on firearm transfers and allows FFLs to release a firearm after three business days if the Oregon State Police are unable to determine whether a recipient is prohibited from possessing a firearm.

Other proposals include expanding the types of relationships that qualify under “domestic violence” charges and banning so-called “extended-capacity” magazines. The domestic violence proposal has the potential to expand the prohibited possessors category to include some misdemeanor crimes. And, of course, arbitrarily limiting ammunition does nothing more than hinder Oregonians’ lawful right to self-defense, since criminals, by definition, do not follow the law.
