Bay State Ban: Massachusetts AG Exploits Tragedy To Expand Pointless Law

posted on July 22, 2016

In an insulting op-ed so full of bias and half-truths we’re surprised it was deemed fit for print, Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey on Wednesday cited the Orlando tragedy and recent police shootings as support for her plan to make the state’s so-called “assault weapons” ban even more of an affront to the Second Amendment than it already is.

Current law prohibits possession of so-called “assault weapons,” as well as copies/duplicates. But after stating AR-style rifles are “not weapons of self-defense” and “have no business being in civilian hands,” Healey announced she was ending sales of “state-compliant” versions of modern sporting rifles by vastly expanding what constitutes a “copy"—a move that could lead to a total ban on semi-automatics.

“States have a duty to enact and enforce laws that protect people from gun violence,” Healy said. But while gun stores statewide are already removing these newly illegal firearms from shelves, Healy still hasn’t attempted to explain how banning a popular home-defense firearm used in only a tiny percent of murders will do anything to protect anyone.
