Armed Citizen Foils Bank Robber’s Attempted Withdrawal

posted on July 7, 2016

An armed bank robber entered the Spokane (Wash.) Teachers Credit Union last Thursday afternoon, jumped over the counter and ordered money from a teller. But according to eyewitness accounts, what happened next caught him off balance.

The criminal had no idea one of the customers was also armed, legally carrying a concealed handgun. The citizen drew his handgun, firing a single shot that sent the bandit running out the door. Spokane Valley officers quickly arrived at the bank, setting up boundaries with K-9 units and air support, but the suspect escaped on foot.

No customers or bank employees were injured during the attempted robbery. However, the deputies said that interviews with other customers, as well as evidence collected at the scene—which included a blood trail—implied the suspect was hit by gunfire from the armed customer. Spokane Valley authorities are asking anyone with information to come forward.
