There’s apparently no slowing the violence in Chicago. Another 50-plus people were shot over this past weekend, bringing the total this year to more than 2,600. That figure is rapidly approaching the 2015 overall total of 2,988. Among the most recent victims: Arshell Dennis III, the 19-year-old son of a Chicago police officer who was scheduled to return to college the same day he was killed.
Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson spent the weekend grieving with the elder Dennis, with whom he patrolled in the 1990s. “Any shooting victim in Chicago is unacceptable,” lamented Johnson. “But this one hits home.”
Johnson also renewed his call for stricter prison sentences for repeat illegal gun offenders. “We need to put something in place that will allow them to sentence these individuals on the high end of the sentencing bar—not give them probation and let them out quickly,” he urged.
Hillary Supporters Want To Repeal The Second Amendment
On Tuesday, CampusReform.org posted a video of interviews with young prospective voters at a Hillary Clinton campaign rally in Annandale, Va. Campus Reform had asked them a simple question: “Do you think it would be a good idea to repeal the Second Amendment?” The answers were astounding.
“Oh yeah, definitely, I really think that we need to start viewing human rights as more important than gun rights.”
“Yeah, I think it would be a good idea. I hate the NRA.”
“Yeah, totally; I mean it’s kind of ridiculous to me that, yeah, the Constitution is great and everything, but you have to remember that people made these, humans make mistakes and it was written hundreds of years ago.”
“So yeah, I think it’s high time, and that Hillary Clinton is definitely going to be one of those people that can really spark that conversation and make a change.”
While so-called “mainstream media” claim Hillary has no such grand design, her college-age supporters seem to believe she does—which is just great and everything with them
Florida “Demanding Moms” Side With Convicted Killer
We told you on Saturday about Gary Lynn Durham, a Florida man who served 11 years in prison for beating a man to death in a road rage incident, only to be killed by an armed citizen shortly after his release. It seems Durham was already crossways with another driver, but this time the innocent victim was better prepared to protect himself from harm.
Incredibly enough, the Florida chapter of the Michael Bloomberg-funded Demanding Moms group sided with Durham, immediately tweeting after seeing a headline about the incident, “We do not have to live this way. #NotOneMore.” To them, you see, the words “road rage” and “shooting” used together in a headline automatically meant an innocent victim had been gunned down in the streets, so they wasted no time in trying to exploit the incident to push for more restrictive gun-control laws.
Truth is, however, this attack made just the opposite case from what the Demanding Moms want everyone to believe—armed good guys do stop armed bad guys, no matter what gun-ban advocates claim.
More News That Disputes Declining Gun Ownership Meme
While anti-gun advocates continue to push their nonsensical theory that gun ownership is rapidly declining in the United States, despite all-time record high gun sales for the past 15 months, a report out of northeast Texas further puts the lie to their assertion.
A feature in the Longview News-Journal states that, among other things, women and first-time gun buyers are making up a large portion of some gun shops’ business. "The biggest increase we have seen has been in women shooters, and it's still across the board (in age and race)," David Kidder, manager of Top Shot Indoor Range and Guns, told the News-Journal.
Kidder continued: "We spend an awful lot of our time working with first-timers here. What we find is, most of the ones that weren't shooters in the past, once they get past that fear, they enjoy the sport. ... Probably, in five years, what you're going to see is the number of women shooters going up dramatically over what it was five years ago.”
Hmmmm, lot of time working with first-timers. That doesn’t sound like all of the record gun sales are due to the same gun owners buying more and more guns, as many on the other side of the issue would have us believe.
Firearm Suppressor Registrations Approach 1 Million
With Vermont, Minnesota and Iowa joining 39 other states in allowing the possession of firearm suppressors—often erroneously called “silencers,” most notably by the federal agency that regulates their possession—in the past year, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has seen a large increase in the number of such devices registered with that federal agency, Shooting Illustratedreports.
Suppressors are far more regulated in the United States than in Europe, especially Scandinavia, where their use is common, unquestioned and considered a common courtesy—like a muffler on a motor vehicle—among hunters.
Alaskan Guide Drops Charging Grizzly With 9 mm Pistol
An Alaskan fishing guide from the Becharof National Wildlife Refuge has led expeditions for 33 years, and experienced several bear encounters. But until last week, he’d never taken one down to protect a client.
On a recent outing, Phil Shoemaker was suddenly aware of a bear charging his husband-and-wife clients, and he knew the importance of shot placement—hitting a vital area of an enraged animal—is challenging. To make matters worse, all he had on hand was a 9 mm semi-automatic pistol—not considered good “grizzly medicine” by most gun and cartridge experts.
Fortunately for his clients, Shoemaker and the 9 mm were up to the task. As the bear charged within feet of the couple, he fired. “My first shot was at its neck … I wanted to hit the head but the bear was moving so fast I simply began shooting each time I could hit a vital area. I hit it six times,” Shoemaker said. “It dropped within six feet of the last shot.”
