Two Charged In High-Profile Chicago Shooting Were Longtime Violent Criminals

posted on August 29, 2016

The two brothers charged with shooting and killing NBA player Dwyane Wade’s cousin prove the futility of both a revolving-door criminal justice system and restrictive gun laws that only affect the law-abiding.

Derren and Darwin Sorrells were charged with first-degree murder in connection with the homicide of Nykea Aldridge. Darwin Sorrells was convicted in 2013 of receiving, possessing or selling a stolen vehicle and for unlawful use or possession of a firearm by a felon. He served three years in state prison before being paroled in early February. In 2011, he had been convicted of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. He was sentenced to five years on that charge. He also has felony convictions from 2007 for aggravated battery in a public place and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm.

Derren Sorrells, who is a documented member of the Gangster Disciples, served four years in state prison after being convicted in 2012 of violating the terms of his electronic monitoring and possession of a stolen vehicle. He was paroled Aug. 12.

As felons, neither was permitted to own a firearm, and neither could have passed a background check to purchase a gun.
