Last week a Cornville, Ariz., man in his 80s was awakened at 4:30 a.m. by what sounded like someone rifling through cabinets in his home. Instinctively, he grabbed his handgun to investigate—and confronted a man attempting a robbery.
The octogenarian ordered the man to lie on the floor as the suspect “begged the homeowner not to shoot him,” sheriff’s spokesman Dwight D’Evelyn told The Daily Courier. The suspect escaped when the homeowner left to call police.
Investigators said the burglar entered the house through an open window, and while searching the neighborhood D’Evelyn stated that “deputies noticed several homes with open windows and front doors with security screens.” He continued, “Average security screen doors do not afford the same protection as securely installed solid-core doors with a quality deadbolt, and unlocked windows provide the opportunity for prowlers to access the home.”
NRA Launches New Trump Ad, $5 Million Ad Buy
The National Rifle Association launched a new TV ad buy this week supporting Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential race.
The $5 million buy is the NRA’s fourth and largest ad buy of the presidential election cycle, and underscores what’s at stake for the Second Amendment if Hillary Clinton is elected president. The spot, called “Nightstand,” airs on national cable as well as regional broadcast in the key battleground states of Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Nevada, Ohio and Virginia.
“The stakes in this election could not be higher,” said Chris W. Cox, NRA-PVF chairman. “The American people cannot afford to elect a president who doesn’t support their Second Amendment freedoms. Hillary Clinton is an elitist, out-of-touch hypocrite who believes in one set of rules for her, and a different set of rules for the rest of us. This ad underscores that fact. Law-abiding Americans should not have a president who would leave them defenseless.”
The Daily Show’s Trevor Noah Accidentally Blows Up Gun-Free Zones
It’s not often we can cite pro-gun content from Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” but as The Federalist reports, host Trevor Noah probably didn’t realize he was blowing up the case for gun-free zones when he criticized a “Muslims Get Out” sign in a St. Cloud, Minn., ice cream shop.
“You know what’s also strange is this man genuinely thought people who go around blowing people up would be stopped by a sign?” Noah said. “Yeah, maybe that’s all the airports need is a sign that says ‘No Terrorists,’ yes? Yeah, and then guys are going to be walking going, ‘Oh, I was going to blow up the airport, but the rules are rules and they said I can’t come in.’”
Substitute “shooting people” for “blowing people up,” and you have exactly the case against so-called “gun-free zones”: Bad guys aren’t deterred by signs. Thank you for your support, Mr. Noah.
Huffington Post Spouts VPC Lies
In a totally ridiculous feature story titled “The Idea That Women Use Guns For Self-Defense Against Men Is A Big Lie,” the Huffington Post reiterated an oft-repeated lie commonly told by gun-ban advocates and other gun-haters.
The feature focused on a so-called “study” by the virulently anti-gun Violence Policy Center that concluded, “For women, guns are not used to save lives, but take them.” The feature even claimed that during 2014 “there were only 15 instances of women using firearms to kill a man in self-defense.”
Of course, most defensive firearm uses don’t result in anyone dying, and in many instances no shots are even fired. And to say that women don’t use guns for self-defense is a bunch of bunk. At A1F Daily, we post an Armed Citizen story each day, and typically have several to choose from. Here are 10 women we have reported on in just the past month or so that VPC and the Huffington Post would apparently consider to be “liars,” since they used guns to save lives:
Missoula, Mont., Residents, Voice Your Opposition To Anti-Gun Ordinance TODAY
On Sept. 26, the Missoula, Mont., City Council is set to hear a proposal that would require background checks on all gun sales and transfers (with limited exceptions).
The fact that this ordinance would apply only to Missoula puts it in direct violation of state firearms pre-emption laws, which prohibit municipalities from passing their own rules and regulations. The resulting patchwork of laws this measure would create could easily make criminals out of law-abiding citizens, and the penalties are stiff: Violators could be subject to a fine of up to $500, a misdemeanor conviction, and the possibility of up to six months in jail. Meanwhile, actual criminals would pay no more attention to this law than they do any other.
USE YOUR POWER!
Montana residents are strongly encouraged to voice their opposition to the measure at the upcoming Missoula City Council hearing, which will take place on Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. at the City Council Chambers, located at 140 West Pine Street in Missoula. Regardless of whether you can make it to the hearing, please contact your councilmembers now to be added to the public record in opposition to the proposed anti-gun measure. You cancontact them here.
Gun Sales Jump In Riot-Torn Charlotte
The Washington Examiner reports that firearm sales in the Charlotte, N.C., area have spiked after several days of violent protests following the fatal police shooting of an African-American man. Justin Anderson, director of marketing for Hyatt Guns, told the Examiner that buyers were lined up at his store Thursday morning to buy self-defense shotguns and 12-gauge buckshot after riots rocked the city.
"First off, our prayers are with law enforcement this morning,” Anderson said. “People are afraid. They see lunacy in the streets being perpetrated by criminals and they are gearing up to protect themselves.
"We had people waiting at the door this morning who are looking at similar guns. People that were on the fence about buying a gun prior to last night are now making that purchase."
