Just before 11 p.m. on Saturday, a man with a crowbar forced his way into a home in the Chicago suburb of Bronzeville. Unfortunately for the would-be burglar, the homeowner had a valid FOID card, a concealed-carry permit—and a gun.
Chicago police told WLS-TV that a 44-year-old man was shot multiple times by the 60-year-old homeowner as he was trying to break into a suburban home. After the shooting, the suspect escaped in a vehicle and drove straight to a nearby medical center, where he remains in critical condition. Officers say charges will be filed in the attempted robbery once the suspect is able to leave the hospital.
Over the weekend, 34 people were shot in Chicago, five of whom died.
Feinstein Says No Law Would Have Stopped Vegas Shooting; Pushes For New Laws Anyway
Anti-gun U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., admitted that no laws on the books could have prevented the recent shooting in Las Vegas. She said as much to “Face the Nation” host John Dickerson on Sunday. Despite that, she’s stumping for new laws, any laws. “Regulations aren’t going to do it,” she proclaimed on the show. “We need a law.”
Feinstein is correct in that the Las Vegas madman acquired his guns and accessories legally. But she is mistaken if she believes that one more law would have prevented the tragedy. Murder is already against the law, but that sure didn’t stop the killer.
The senator is also correct when she says that “no one appears to be safe anywhere.” Evil does indeed walk among us, and it can’t simply be legislated away. Had he used a vehicle to barrel through the Strip and mow people down, would Feinstein be looking to ban vehicles?
On Monday, the 84-year-old gun control supporter announced that she was running for re-election. In a tweet, she cited “ending gun violence” as one of her priorities.
A1F Contributor Kopel On Antis’ Mass Shooting Lies
In an opinion piece in Sunday’s Wall Street Journal, frequent A1F contributor Dave Kopel debunks one of the most nefarious myths perpetrated over the past several months.
Responding to the Las Vegas tragedy, U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., said, “Already this year, there have been more mass shootings than days in the year.” In his analysis, Kopel explores how Murphy’s likely source—the online Mass Shooting Tracker, which lists 340 such incidents this year—uses a deceptively overbroad definition of mass shootings. In reality, Kopel explains, there are only about 20-22 mass shootings per year, according to the FBI. Moreover, only about four are the sort of random events that receive widespread media attention—most are domestic killings, murders committed during armed robberies and gang killings.
While anti-gunners use tragedies like the Las Vegas attack to depict a nation awash in gun crime, Kopel presents data showing the opposite is true—as law-abiding citizens have obtained more firearms and carry permits, America has statistically become a much safer place. Read the full article here.
Anti-Gun Movie Mogul Harvey Weinstein Disgraced, Fired
Harvey Weinstein, the powerful Hollywood producer who donated to Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign and crusaded against the Second Amendment, has been fired by The Weinstein Company after The New York Times published a series of sexual harassment allegations made against him by women he worked with, including actress Ashley Judd.
Many of Weinstein's friends and political fellow travelers haven’t been eager to call attention to his sins. “Saturday Night Live” reportedly tested some jokes about the incident, but cut them before performance. Creator Lorne Michaels seemingly ascribed the decision to Weinstein’s New York origins, although that has hardly stopped the show from going after President Donald Trump week after week.
Weinstein has a long history of rage directed toward the NRA. “They’re going to wish they weren’t alive after I’m done with them,” he claimed about an anti-gun film starring Meryl Streep that he was planning to make at one point. Now the statement that he released apologizing for his predatory behavior towards women promised, “I am going to need a place to channel that anger, so I’ve decided that I’m going to give the NRA my full attention.” We’ll be waiting, Harvey!
