Chicago Murders Up From Last Year

posted on February 25, 2017

With criminals still walking out of jails far earlier than their crimes would dictate, and with arrest rates falling, it’s no wonder we keep reporting on Chicago crime. And unfortunately, the Windy City is already on track to outpace 2016—their deadliest year in decades—in terms of homicides. It includes the seven people who were shot to death on Wednesday, one of whom was a pregnant woman.

That figure represents the highest daily death total since Christmas Day 2016, when eight people were killed. The seven people killed this week bring the 2017 total to 99 deaths. While Wednesday represented the highest single-day toll of victims, four other days this year have seen five fatal shootings.

It’s become a tragic case of “same old, same old” in Chicago. And until city leaders decide to make some changes, we’ll likely be reporting on more record-breaking figures as the year goes on.
