Illinois Lawmaker Proposes Dumping Gun Owner ID Requirement

posted on February 28, 2017

A state legislator from southern Illinois has introduced a plan to scrap the state’s Firearm Owners’ ID (FOID) program, which acts as a registry for gun owners in the state.

State Rep. Jerry Costello II said the FOID program is losing money and creates more bureaucratic hurdles for the state’s law-abiding gun owners.

The FOID card is needed for Illinois residents to purchase and possess firearms and to purchase ammunition. But it is most effective as a way for the state government to register law-abiding gun owners, and that’s why it should be nixed per Costello’s plan.
