Sheriff’s Association Voices Opposition To N.M. Anti-Gun Bills

posted on February 9, 2017

We warned you Tuesday about two blatantly anti-gun measures under consideration in New Mexico—Senate Bill 48 and House Bill 50—that would criminalize most private firearm transfers in the state, while not affecting violent criminals.

Now, the New Mexico Sheriff’s Association is speaking out against the proposal, calling the bills “part of a national gun control agenda funded by New York billionaire Michael Bloomberg … [that] would criminalize virtually every private firearm transfer in the state.”

“These measures would make it harder for law-abiding New Mexicans to exercise their Second Amendment rights, waste scarce law enforcement resources, and do nothing to keep guns out of the hands of criminals,” stated the letter, which was signed by 32 of the state’s 33 sheriffs.

The letter went on: “… this scheme would be unenforceable without creating a gun registry. We know this because a 2013 U.S. Department of Justice internal memo on gun violence prevention strategies stated that the success of expanded background check laws depends on requiring firearm registration.”
