The beginning ofa new year is always the perfect time to reflect on the past year and look forward to the one to come. The holidays bring a special opportunity for rest, relaxation and spending time with family and friends—for many, it’s the happiest season of the year.
This year should be no different. But with the results of the midterm elections fresh in our memory, we must all remember that as soon as the celebrating is over, it will once again be time to engage in the ongoing battle to save the Second Amendment.
“This will be a priority for us going into the next Congress.” —Rep. Nancy Pelosi
Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., certainly isn’t backing down. With the Democrats taking over the U.S. House of Representatives, Pelosi likely will retake the reins as speaker of the House—and she has some big plans for America’s law-abiding gun owners.
“I would rather pass gun safety legislation than win the election,” Pelosi stated back in February. Putting aside the fact that the Democrats’ gun-ban bills are not really “gun safety” legislation, Pelosi’s party has won the election and is ready to begin the process of curtailing your right to keep and bear arms. She’s even said she’ll be making gun control a legislative priority for 2019.
“The American people deserve real action to end the daily epidemic of gun violence that is stealing the lives of our children on campuses, in places of worship and on our streets,” Pelosi said shortly after the election.
Of course, “gun violence” is not a problem, since guns are inanimate objects that can’t perform any act of violence without a user. But criminal use of guns is a problem. And we all want to do what we can to ensure criminal violence, including murder and assault, is reduced, thereby making our children safer wherever they might be.
The difference between gun rights proponents and Pelosi is that we believe the path to accomplishing that goal is quite different than what anti-gun Democrat politicians promote. We know that taking guns from law-abiding Americans—or making firearms harder for them to acquire or use—emboldens criminals, making the country a more dangerous place. Pelosi and her cohorts, on the other hand, believe “reducing the number of guns,” regardless of whether they are owned by criminals or law-abiding citizens, is the “answer” to the “gun violence” problem.
As we approach 2019, enjoy the holiday break and the rest and relaxation it brings. But be ready: The enemies of freedom will sweep into 2019 with more resolve than ever before.
