The U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center-Crane Division has awarded a five-year contract to Federal Premium for .40-cal. frangible training rounds. The ammunition will feature Federal Premium’s lead-free Catalyst high-performance primer.

The contract is for up to $20 million worth of ammunition.

“Our Catalyst lead-free priming technology is a major breakthrough and we’re excited to see it used by those that protect our freedom,” said Jason Nash, Senior Director of Marketing.

Catalyst, unlike other lead-free primers, does not absorb ignition-inhibiting moisture, so it is more reliable. The round is also noted for an efficient powder burn, which allows for more consistency in terms of bullet velocity.
