Amy Schumer continues to take aim at the Second Amendment. In a recent television sketch, Schumer sells handguns on a “Gun Show” infomercial, where a caller complains he can’t buy a gun because of his violent felony record. That’s when Schumer says, “You can absolutely get a gun if you have several felonies, as long as you buy it on the Internet or at a gun show.”
The bit takes an obvious swing at tired “gun show loophole” arguments, as well as an inflammatory—and deceitful—narrative of selling guns to the mentally ill, the blind, children and terrorists. But facts aren’t important to Schumer, who tweets, “We’re not interesting in controlling law abiding citizens’ guns,” and who tells journalists to use the term “gun safety” instead of “gun control.” Schumer spinning her obvious gun-control platform as one of safety is ironic, as the National Rifle Association is the true and acknowledged leader in firearms safety. Perhaps Schumer should become a member?
