On Tuesday afternoon, a woman pulled up to her O’Fallon, Mo., home only to find a strange man standing in the driveway. Local police say the man approached her car, trying to engage in an altercation.

As the man attacked the woman, she fled into her house, retrieved her gun and fired multiple times at the intruder who had entered the house behind her, killing him. The name of the suspected intruder has not been released, but reports say the he looked to be in his 30s and that the woman did not recognize him.

A police officer told Fox 2 Now, “We responded to a call of a burglary in progress. While in route, we were informed that the victim shot the subject, who she had a confrontation with, inside of her house.” The incident was unnerving for residents who couldn’t drive home for a time after the shooting, while school bus drop-offs were also rerouted.
