In the dark, at 4 a.m., the last sound you want to hear is someone rummaging through your apartment. But that’s exactly what Miguel Alcantara heard. And it sent him running for his 9 mm pistol.

Sac City, Iowa, police say that early Wednesday morning, Bendji Joseph broke into the apartment with the “intention of hurting the residents.” Fearing for his safety, and the safety of everyone in the residence, Alcantara fired at the suspect, striking him twice.

Joseph was treated for trauma locally, then life-flighted to a hospital in Sioux City, where he remains in stable condition. The charges against Joseph range from felony first- and third-degree burglary to aggravated assault.
