A young Houston man arrived home around 9 p.m. Tuesday night, where his wife and two children, ages five and six, were waiting. But before he could reach the doorknob, three men jumped out and began pistol-whipping him, then shoved their way inside the home.

Investigators told WLS-TV the invaders forced the family to lie on the floor while they began to ransack the residence. However, the homeowner managed to grab his own gun and exchange fire with the suspects—who fled the house and sped away in a pickup.

Houston Police Lt. Larry Crowson picks up the story: “We received a report of a male at the hospital. He had been shot. He has been transported to Memorial Hermann in critical condition, but he is expected to survive.” The hospitalized suspect, who was shot in the head, was arrested, while the other two men are still at large. The family was unharmed.
