The southwestern tip of Virginia recently took at step toward better protecting schoolchildren when the Lee County School Board voted earlier this month to allow teachers to carry firearms. The vote was unanimous.

"The only way to fight a gun if somebody comes through these doors with a gun to shoot our students, is with another gun," Michael Kidwell, Lee County School Board Chairman, said, according to WJHL.

The board had been studying the proposal for about a year. While some members of the public objected, board members said it was the most financially feasible option, as the district can’t afford to put armed school resource officers at each campus.

Teachers seem to generally support the idea, with some already volunteering to be considered to be armed at school.

The school board said the number of teachers who can carry will be limited, and the names of those authorized to have firearms will not be made public.
