In these uncertain times, many Americans have chosen to purchase a firearm for the first time and, by extension, to embrace and exercise their Second Amendment rights.

“A rise in gun sales during a national emergency is the exhibition of the practical nature of Americans on display. We take care of ourselves, our families and our neighbors,” writes America’s 1st Freedom Editor in Chief Frank Miniter.

This is no small decision and with it comes a great deal of responsibility. The NRA has always advocated for responsible ownership of firearms and has made numerous resources available for those looking to exercise this constitutional right.

Chief amongst these resources are the NRA Mentor videos available on the NRA Publications YouTube channel. From gun-safety basics to proper firearm maintenance to storage solutions and more, the channel is filled with detailed videos on everything a new gun owner may need. There are also detailed videos for skills, such as how to find your sight picture, as well as what you might expect to find once you visit a shooting range.

Beyond this, check out a plethora of articles throughout NRA Publications, such as on steps you should take once you’ve bought a firearm and a primer on obscure firearms safety rules.

The NRA also offers a wide array of programs for gun owners of all experience levels. For first-time gun owners, firearms training is the most pertinent among those offered. Attendance for NRA Training reaches approximately one million people annually and the NRA is recognized as the gold standard for firearm safety training at all levels.

Our Second Amendment gives us the freedom to protect ourselves and our families. It’s up to each of us to make sure we handle this right responsibly.

President’s Column | What a Year It Has Been!

Wow! How fast a year has gone by since being elected president at the end of April last year! My first column was titled “It’s A New Day At The NRA,” and included the following:

Standing Guard | We Are the Good Citizens

I am a big believer in transparency. Each individual needs privacy from unconstitutional government intrusion—this especially includes what guns a law-abiding American citizen might own—but an association of freedom-loving citizens must be transparent.

U.S. v. Hemani Arguments

On March 2, the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in U.S. v. Hemani. The case involves a defendant who is fighting a federal indictment for possessing a firearm while being a marijuana user.

President’s Column | Getting You Up to Speed

A lot of things have occurred over the past month or so that not all members are completely aware of. I’ll use my column this month to update you on some important issues—transparency.

Standing Guard | The NRA Gathers to Celebrate Our Freedom

The momentum we’re seeing across the country is both encouraging and energizing. January opened with tremendous activity at the NRA booth during SHOT Show, where members, industry partners and supporters stopped by to connect, share ideas and reaffirm their commitment to freedom and the Second Amendment.

Port Authority Doubles Down on Constitution-Free Zone with High-Profile Arrest

As anyone who has passed a basic civics class knows, the U.S. Constitution is the supreme law of the land. All legislation and official government actions are subject to its limits.
