11-Year-Old Saves Family From Charging Bear

posted on July 6, 2017

An Alaska family is safe, thanks to an 11-year-old boy who fought off a bear attacking them as they walked to a fishing spot last month.

According to local media reports, the boy was walking with several family members when the bear attacked, knocking down the boy’s uncle and jumping on him before he could fire a shot from his rifle. The boy fired three shots from his shotgun, finally dropping the bear with the last shot.

The boy’s father said things could have been a lot worse if his son hadn’t been carrying the gun in his hands at the time. “He was carrying it in his hands rather than on his shoulder,” the father told the Juneau Empire. “That was the problem with the other ones, when the bear came at his uncle, he had his rifle on his shoulder and the bear was very close, so he couldn’t get it off in time.”
