California is a state tough on gun owners through strict regulations and laws. The State Justice Department reported as of Jan. 1 that California has more than 2.5 million gun owners—twice the number in 2012.

The rate of ownership has steadily increased from 6 percent to 13 percent annually even with restrictions from 2012 to 2019, taken from the Armed and Prohibited Persons System (APPS) annual report.
