Covering the Baltimore riots this week, CNN reporter Brooke Baldwin won top honors in the “Huh?” category of truly world-class non-sequiturs when—to fill airtime with words, any words—she blamed the chaos on American veterans.

While interviewing Democrat Maryland Congressman Elijah Cummings, who indulged in his predictable “blame the police” routine, CNN’s Baldwin said, “A lot of young people, and I love our nation’s veterans, but some of them are coming back from war, they don’t know the communities, and they are ready to do battle.”

In other words, Baldwin and Cummings managed to malign both the police who protect us from rampaging criminals, and our men and women in the armed forces, who protect us from terrorists and tyrants. This proves, yet again, that it’s often better to remain silent and be only thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.
