Democrats Oppose Mental Health Bill Due To Gun-Rights Provisions

posted on April 16, 2016

For years, both major political parties have discussed improvements needed in the country’s mental health system. But now Democrats are contesting a Republican reform bill because it also preserves gun rights.

Sen. Jon Cornyn, R-Texas, wrote the legislation to protect Second Amendment rights and combined it with the mental health bill that passed in March.

The Hill reports Democrats oppose language in the bill that forces a hearing in order to “ban someone from buying guns due to mental illness” or that guarantees restoration of a person’s Second Amendment rights once they recover from a temporary mental disorder.
