Did A Researcher Just Conclude That More Gun Safes Will Reduce Gang Violence?

posted on May 5, 2017

A headline from the American Association for the Advancement of Science claims, “Study finds 16 children hospitalized for firearms injuries each day.” The study, presented to the American Academy of Pediatrics, is only an abstract; no backup data was available for review. Which, of course, keeps anyone from investigating their findings.

The abstract does say that "57 percent of firearm-related injuries in children under 15 years old were unintentional.” However, she also admits, “While the majority of injuries in children under age 15 were unintentional, most among 15- to 19-year-olds were the result of assault.”

This is an old trick: Including those up to 19 years old as "children" also snares thousands of victims of gang violence, yet nowhere does the article mention “drugs” or “gangs.”

Yet the abstract’s author concludes their research “highlights the need for improved gun safety and storage practices.” Finally, she’s found a cure for urban gang violence: more gun safes.
